Laravel instead of WordPress: when custom development pays off for your business

WordPress is a solid choice for blogs and standard websites – but as soon as custom functionality, security or performance become critical, your business is usually better off with custom development based on Laravel, and calculated over five years it is often no more expensive. As a developer who knows both worlds, I will honestly explain when each system is the right choice.

Where WordPress is strong

First things first: WordPress powers a significant part of the web, and not without reason. For a blog, an editorial magazine or a simple marketing website with standard requirements, WordPress is set up quickly, editorial teams feel at home immediately, and the choice of themes and plugins is enormous. If that is exactly what you need and your budget is very tight, WordPress gives you a lot of website for little money.

The hidden costs of WordPress

The purchase is cheap – running it often isn't. Four items are regularly underestimated:

• Plugin licences: forms, multilingual support, backups, SEO, caching – the pro versions of the usual plugins quickly add up to 200 to 800 euros per year.

• Update maintenance: core, theme and a dozen plugins need constant updating – and every update can cause conflicts that someone has to fix.

• Security: as the most widespread CMS, WordPress is the favourite target of automated attacks. Most successful attacks exploit outdated or poorly maintained third-party plugins.

• Customisation against the grain: as soon as a requirement no longer fits the plugin grid, it gets expensive – developers bend the system with workarounds that can break with every update.

What custom development with Laravel does differently

Laravel is the world's most widely used PHP framework for custom web applications. The difference to the kit principle: your website contains exactly the features you need – and nothing else.

• No plugin zoo: features are developed to fit instead of being assembled from third-party plugins. Less third-party code means a smaller attack surface and fewer update conflicts.

• Tailor-made admin panel: with Filament you manage content in an interface that exactly matches your processes – without the menu items you never need.

• Performance without tricks: lean code is fast by default; you don't need three caching plugins to achieve good loading times.

• Clean extensibility: integrations with ERP, payment or CRM are normal development work instead of a plugin lottery.

• The code belongs to you: no vendor lock-in, no licence costs – any Laravel developer can take over the project.

When WordPress is still the right choice

Honesty is part of the deal: if you mainly blog, your editorial team already knows WordPress, your requirements are fully covered by proven plugins and the budget is very tight – then choose WordPress. Custom development is not worthwhile for requirements that already exist as solid standard solutions.

A five-year calculation example

As a guideline, a typical business website with content management and a few custom features:

• WordPress: build from around 3,000 euros, plus 300 to 700 euros per year for plugin licences and 500 to 1,000 euros for update maintenance and conflict fixing. After five years: 7,000 to 11,500 euros.

• Laravel custom development: build from around 5,000 euros, plus 300 to 500 euros per year for maintenance – licence costs do not apply. After five years: 6,500 to 7,500 euros.

WordPress for standard, Laravel for custom – that is the rule of thumb in one sentence.
